Here’s my review… or more accurately view on The Watchmen film. My first attempt at something like this but expect more.

Number 2: The Exorcist.

This movie has story after story about it, and really just became a legend itself.

This movie was one of the earlier ones not to use an obvious monster as the villian or the horror, but used the monster lingering inside us all, and put it in a little girl, starting the theme of little girls being quite possibly the scariest horror creatures ever.

This movie naturally stirred up controversy, death threats were sent to all the cast, including the little girl, so she need bodyguards to guard her months after its release.

I’m not sure what movie trivia I can add to this, as if theres any of it you don’t know, and as if theres anyone left that hasn’t seen this film.. if you havent… do it NOW!

And finally, the best horror movie of all time is none other than!!!

NUMBER 1!!!!!

JAWS!!

It doesn’t follow the horror look but contains all the elements…maybe a controversial choice for number one, but this movie scared an entire generation from swimming, not only the beach but some where afraid of swimming pools after this (truthfully). The movie has had such powerful effect on people, and its great when that happens with a movie, even better if its a horror.

The whole way the film is done is fantastic, not showing the shark, the tension of the music.. and then when you have learnt that the music signals Jaws arrival, they make him appear with no music, making every grown man in the audiecne shriek in terror and the women faint.

While not a direct horror film, it contains all the elements and jsut for the mass effect it had its my pick for Number One.

Number 6: Alien

In space no one can hear you scream. The amazing dark twisted art of H.R Giger makes this film go beyond the cheesy 1940′s space man genre and become something that still has a powerful effect today.

The scariest parts about this film are when you know its coming and the tension will keep building and building until…….its just a cat, a false climax. and then next time with out warning the alien will appear from no where. The film is a master of tricking the view but its not trick that it’s number 6.

Number 5: Night of the Living Dead

The zombie movie that started the craze. Perhaps outdate by todays standards, this film was shocking to anyone that watched it during its release, the brutal violence of zombie eating flesh was too much. and perhaps thats why shortly after the films release the film rating system was implemented… interesting to think so atleast.

This film doesn’t bullshit around either. Instead of waiting for a story to start it it just hits you off straight away. Two people visit a cemertry and then one is attacked by a man and killed. thats it.

This film whether on purpose or not looked at the human psyqiue and that while if we just worked together we could solve our problems, ultimately we care too much about ourselves to help others.. and thats our down fall.

4: Bambi

Am I kidding? well not really. Sure the movie is the generic overly brightly coloured Disney horse shit, which is scary in its own way. But this movie probably made more kids cry than when they found out santa wasnt real.

3: Psycho

The film that made me to scared to shower. Well not really. But it did for lot of people, I mean if a movie lead could be killed off in the first third of the movie. no one is safe.

Hitchcock was a master of the thriller, knowing that they didnt neede the blood to make it scary, but the charecters. and Norman Bates has to be one of the scariest charecters of all time. Who doesn’t know that one guy exactly like him?

The movie that started the slasher genre only to be carried on by the daughter of its star….. you solve that movie trivia yourself

Number 8: The Shining

A classic of horror movie cinema, and ofcourse im refering to the Jack Nicholson version of the film. This movie is almost like a bad acid trip, and thats what makes it scary. Flesh peeling off people, demented children and an ax wielding maniac have all helped make this movie stick in everyones mind as one of the scariest, and coolest, movies of all time. Even if you haven’t seen it, you know all about it. So what more do I need to say?

Number 7: Dracula

I never found this movie particularly scary, perhaps it felt outdated, more so than Nosferatu or Dr Calagari, but this film has to be one of the most memorable horrors ever.

If asked to think of a horror movie charecter most people would first say Dracula, and even with out seeing this film would do the famous Bela Lugosi accent and pose. This film set the stage for all horrors following it and pretty much all of film amd pulp culture following it.

The special effect were great for the time, and most of all the atmosphere was insane, it worked perfectly for what it was, even though it wasn’t the most high budget production even for its time it’s become the better or for worse cliche horror set.

10: Ghostbusters

The horror comedy classic, sure it’s more comedy than horror, but I’d have marshmellow for brains if I left this off my list. The movie got a bunch of the top comedic film stars, and said why not put them in a movie, and what resulted is one of the best films ever, one of the funniest even and number 10 on my list.

The whole concept is amazing, and just fun to watch and play along, it spawned a sequel which I still quiet enjoy and theres been rumours of a 3rd movie going round since the 2nd one was released, though the group came back to star in a video game which, like the 3rd movie is also in development hell…. fingers cross on this one. Or else, who you gonna call?

Number 9: BattleRoyale

Another one from Japan, this one doesn’t contain any serial killers (well….does it?) monsters, ghosts or vampires, and thats what makes it so scary.

Japan has hit a all time high unemployment rate, teenagers are failing school and ignoring their parents, so what do you do? well you send a random school to an island where they all fight to the death of course…what were you expect? (with the recession, how long till we do that?)

Oh and if you leave the island or stand in an area you’re not meant to, a neck brace on you neck blows up, boom!

What makes this so scary is the gritty visual style, the dark story, and the fact…who can you trust when you’re in this situation. The film also deals with the tough subject of suicide atleast 3 times from what i can remember. a messed up film, but a brillliant one… number 9 on my list!

Silence of the Lambs

Just missing the top 10 spot is the horror/thriller classic Silence of the Lambs, by far the best in the Hannibal series of films and the most twisted.

Yet again based on the same true story as Texas chainsaw massacre (still only loosely), this film looks at trusting one of the worst serial killers in order to catch another.

With so many quotable lines, and been so parodied, very few people have seen this film and yet know all about it, it has that much of a culturaly impact. so if you’re one of those people, hurry up and go out and see this movie!

number 13: Friday the 13th

Oh yea, like you didnt know it was gonna be this.

While this came in when the slasher genre was already in full effect it pushed it to the level it is today.. though that may not be for best, Firday the 13th pushed the envelope of what the slashers movies could do in terms of sex and violence targeting a more teen audience.

We all now know the twist at the end of the first one, and if you didn’t, watching the 28th movie on this list would of spoilt it for you.

As far as the serial killer movie charecters go, Jason Vorhees is usually top billing. Or is it Ma Vorhees?

Number 12: Plan 9 from outer space

maybe a bit risky putting this on the list, let alone at number 12 but let me explain.

Sure the movie is…terrible.. it really is, but it adds to the experience. Movies, believe it or not are about entertaining an audience, and this film does that. As long as you don’t take it too serious, and why should you? It’s about aliens bringing back the dead after all, so you have to watch with an open mind.

Part of the fun over the years has been to tear the film apart but also just watch it for what it is, a film about aliens and zombies, whats cooler than that?

I could list all the little oddball facts about the film and each mistake but chances are you know them all already. This isn’t a scary film, but a fun film, and has met cult status unlike any other film. You know of it.. now see it.

I always find it hard to call monster movies such as Godzilla, King Kong and any of the other giants real horror films, as they’re too far out there to create any atmosphere of fear.. but thats just my opinion.

So why number 14 for Godzilla then? Well other than being one of the most recognized names in pulp culture history, this movie too a direction that hadn’t been mainstream before and was often reserved for more art house or auteur films, and that’s an anti war message.

Most of us know that Godzilla was created from an atom bomb blast (though there’s slight variations during its decades of existence) which was a really horrific idea coming from the country that experienced an atom bomb first hand, and goes to show the destruction it causes embodied in a creature.

The Godzilla franchise has sequel after sequel, remakes (a new one due soon), started new franchises, games and just about anything else you can think of, and as far as monster movies go.. godzilla is king baby

We’re halfway there till the number 1 spot… so lets make it a good one… it’s Cat People…

Sure, it’s hardly a horror sounding film, but this is when horrors started to become more of what we know and have all seen today. From the quiet build up to the surprise jump out and scare you, as well as really looking at using a POV shot to create more tension. POV shots weren’t really thought of then and this film was one of the first (if not the first) to really experiment with that in a horror setting.

So obviously the film didn’t make the list for its plot. It was during the monster mash sort of period (at the very beginning of it really) and was almost a movie that took itself too seriously, which is strange for something called cat people.

Not many people would know this movie now, but its earned its spot in horror history and the number 15 spot on the list.
